Stock market

The GTSM index fluctuated in positive territory and then turned weak in the month of October. The index firmed up in the beginning of the month as small electronic stocks taking turns making gains. But subsequently as market interest was switched to financial and traditional stocks, electronic stocks were under considerable pressure of sell-off, and the index went down to 124.94 on the 8th. From the 9th on, spurred by the Dow closing above 10000 and the DRAM, solar energy, and games sectors turning strong, the index again firmed up gradually to close at 130.05 on the 20th. But from the 21st on, dragged down by the losing streak of the U.S. stock markets and the weak performance of electronic sectors, the index, with the exception of textile stocks, lost ground to close at 120.91 on the 30th, the lowest point in the month and off 3.26% from the end of the previous month.

In the Emerging Stock Market, the average daily turnover amounted to NT$779 million and a total of 104,388 transactions executed in the month of October. At the beginning of month, there were 206 stocks registered as emerging stocks, which was increased to 215 by the end of month as 2 stocks transferred to the general board of GTSM or TSE or were delisted and 11 new stocks registered. The market recorded the highest turnover of the month on the 8th with more than NT$974 million.
